Did you know your blog can be a traffic generation magnet for your website? Are you leveraging it to create the maximum results for your business? This checklist is focused on strategies you can use to drive traffic to your website using your blog and your presence in other blogs.
I’m going to assume you already know the basics of blog creation. Perhaps you have already put up your blog on WordPress or Blogger, with a link to your website in your Blogger profile, and include your website URL in the links bar on your blogroll.
I’m also going to assume you already know to post high quality and relevant content to your blog on a regular basis, encouraging user feedback and comments. This will help you get high search engine rankings and keep people coming to your blog and visiting your site, which will ultimately convert to paying customers for your products and services.
If you haven’t done that yet, make sure that you take care of some preliminary steps:
a) Identify your niche.
b) Identify short tail and long tail keywords related to your niche.
c) Register your blog and start posting at least once a week.
Step 1: Identify the top 10 influential or popular blogs in your niche and if there is not already a blog post listing or reviewing the top 10 blogs in your niche, be the first to write it.
This will rank highly in the search engines, which will result in increased traffic to your blog and ultimately your website. Also, it establishes your credibility as an expert as you are reviewing what is said in your niche and influential blogs that serve your niche, which only someone who is knowledgeable of the niche can do.
Step 2: Write each author of the above blogs, introducing yourself and your blog, and alerting them to being named onto your list.
As you develop relationships with the top bloggers of your niche, you can be sure they will remember you. You can post a small review of their blog on your blog, if need be, and request a link from them to your blog in return. These mentions will increase the total number of links you have, resulting in a higher search engine ranking.
Step 3: Claim your blog on Technorati.
Technorati.com is like the Google search engines for blogs. You definitely want to claim your blog on their site, before someone else does.
Step 4: Submit your blog to blog directories and bookmarking sites after each post update.
Examples of ping services include www.pingoat.com and daily blog tips.com/ping list . These ping services update major blog sites like Technorati and alert them to your updates. This will push your blog to the top of their “recently updated” pages and increase your site awareness and traffic. You might even make it to the top page, if only for a short time.
Step 5: Submit your blog to blog directories and carnivals.
A good starting point is Blogcatalog.com and Blogcarnival.com. This is where people find quality blog articles related to their topic and post them together under one heading. Submitting your blog article gives it a high chance of being accepted, and generate a lot of traffic to your site.
Step 6: Register with statistic tracking services and install tracking software on your blog.
One tracking service is Mybloglog.com. Tracking services tell you who is visiting and referring traffic to your blog.
Step 7: Identify other blogs in your niche and industry and be a fan.
Leave a high value comment on their blogs (in other words, don’t just write “Nice post”!). They will usually allow you to leave your URL at the bottom of your comment. But people won’t feel compelled to check you out unless you are already providing value to the conversation by adding a thoughtful, useful blog comment.
Step 8: Use trackbacks and links.
Leave lots of trackbacks and links to popular blog posts on your own blog. This will encourage those you link or trackback to, to do the same and will increase traffic to your site.
Step 9: Encourage dialogue.
In your own blog and posts, invite comment and discussion from readers. Respond to their comments. This will get visitors to return to your blog, pushing it up in the blog directories, but more importantly, establishing a community of readers that knows you are listening and responding to what they have to say.
If you are already receiving the traffic and leads you want from your blog, congratulations! You have successfully created a traffic-driving, lead-generating blog campaign. If not, try one or more of the steps above and track your results. Always remember: Test, track and tweak for maximum results.
